Dewelling in the Canyon

2026

Concept

West Vancouver, BC , Canada

This house is located on one hill of West Vancouver, overlooking the ocean yet could not get close to it.

This design originates from an in-depth conversation with the client, a passionate explorer of nature and geology. His deep appreciation for the world’s diverse landscapes, particularly the profound historical presence of Red Rock Canyon—where ancient, billion-year-old red strata rise dramatically—resonated strongly with his own character. We sought to preserve this personal memory within the living space and transform it into a home that feels uniquely his.

Utilizing the red concrete, we intent to transform the warmth and heavy feelings of those red rocks into the basic living background of this house. The topography leads us to place three volumes downwards with sunlit corridors connecting them into one cohesive space, creating a dynamic spatial experience that evokes the immersive sensation of hiking through a canyon. The interplay between solid concrete volumes and transparent glass further animates the interior with ever-shifting natural light and shadow, infusing the home with vitality and a living connection to its surroundings.
