The White Villa

2025

West Vancouver, BC , Canada

Situated on the mountain of West Vancouver, the site is surrounded by multi-layered forest with the ground extending downwards, moving away from the ocean view.

Being isolated from the urbanscape by existing trees, this villa responds to the topography by placing the main entrance on the ground level, and the living area cascading downward to the bottom where it opens to a vast lawn with a tennis court hidden behind the trees, forming a private area where only the family can enjoy.

The whole spatial sequence is a transition from the obvious and public to the mysterious and private, forming a cave-like experience where the spacial hierarchy is established to mitigate the conflicts between public and private while utilizing the natural conditions of the site. With the deep overhangs from different levels, this villa appears to be embedded into earth while reaching out to the surrounding natural environment like tentacles of life.

With the white concrete, this villa presents a pure, abstract and almost sacred qualities that contrast poetically with the rich tones of the forest. This deliberate contrast expresses both deep reverence for nature and a profound love for living in harmony with it.
